About the Event
Cecilia Sosa will discuss the documentary film Cantos insumisos [Rebel Songs] (2023), offer an overview of the project "Screening Violence: A Transnational Study of Post-Conflict Imaginaries," and discuss the "screening" of gender, memory, and violence with the audience. Cantos insumisos [Rebel Songs], directed by award-winning Argentine filmmaker Alejo Moguillansky, is a documentary film on the cross-fertilization of gender and imaginaries of violence in post-dictatorship Argentina. The film, cowritten by Cecilia Sosa and Philippa Page, immerses viewers in questions of memory and gender in the imaginaries of post-dictatorship Argentina.

About the Speaker
Cecilia Sosa is an Argentinean sociologist and cultural journalist, currently working as a senior researcher at the Centre for Memory Studies and Post-Conflict Cultures, University of Nottingham. Her PhD in Drama (Queen Mary, University of London) was awarded as the Most Distinguished Thesis of the Year (2012, AHGBI). Her first monograph is entitled Queering Acts of Mourning in the Aftermath of Argentina’s Dictatorship (Tamesis Books, 2014). She has published extensively on the crossroads of memory, performance and affect in journals such as Memory Studies, JLACS and LATR. She is the co-curator and co-scripter of Cantos insumisos [Rebel Songs] (Alejo Moguillanksy, 2023). She has recently co-edited the book Voices of Democracy: Argentina 1983-2023 (2024, University of Newcastle): https://eprints.ncl.ac.uk/296231
