Senior Seminar: Iberian Islam 1492-1609
Preference to seniors. The history, culture, and literature of Iberian Muslim communities from 1492 to the Morisco expulsions of 1609-14. Islam and the West. Religious minorities in Europe. Inquisition and resistance. Gender and Islam. Class discussions will focus on selected works of Aljamiado literature (students will learn to read Arabic script), and the final project will involve the transcription and study of a sixteenth-century manuscript. Taught in Spanish. NOTE: This course must be taken for a minimum of 3 units and a letter grade to be eligible for WIM credit.
