Comparative Black Feminist Theory: Brazil and United States

What makes Black feminism distinct from other kinds of feminist traditions? How is Black feminism shaped by the historical material conditions of Black women? What local battles shape Black feminist demands in Brazil and the United States? In this course, we will examine contemporary Black feminist writings by Brazilian and U.S scholars and activists on permanent land rights, anti-carceral resistance, sexuality, and labor. We will read works by Sueli Carneiro, Lélia Gonzalez, Imani Perry, Keisha-Khan Perry, among many others.
