The Comics: More Than Words Research Group will be hosting a reading session on Oak Flat: A Fight for Sacred Land in the American West (2020) by Lauren Redniss. In this event, we will explore how sacred lands for Native American communities are being threatened by mineral extractivism and how the interests of local communities can enter in conflict with big corporations. We will also explore how comics can become a powerful tool for journalism and activism.

Lauren Redniss is an American artist and writer who was awarded a “Genius Grant” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She is the author of visual non-fiction, including Radioactive: Marie and Pierre Curie, A Tale of Love and Fallout (2010), Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future (2015), and Oak Flat: A Fight for Sacred Land in the American West (2020), which The New York Times called "astonishing" and "virtuosic."

The event will be in-person, and will take place in Pigott Hall, Room 216, on October 8th at 12 PM PST. In preparation for the talk and the subsequent discussion, please read the visual novel selection.
