Comics More Than Words: SUCHO Ukranian Meme Database
We are very excited to announce the second event of the Winter quarter of Comics: More than Words, supported by the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (DLCL) and kindly sponsored by the Department of English and the Department of Art & Art History.
We will be hosting Yuliya Ilchuk (Assistant Professor of Slavic Languages and Literature) Quinn Dombrowski, (Academic Technology Specialist in Literatures, Cultures, and Languages), and Simon Wiles (Digital Scholarship Research Developer at the Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research at Stanford), who will be presenting their work with Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO), an initiative of over 1,500 international volunteers who are collaborating online to digitize and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage.
In this presentation, they will introduce and discuss the SUCHO Meme Wall, a collection of the many internet memes created in connection with the war in Ukraine. They will also discuss the tools they used to build this collection and talk about what we gain/lose when using something like PixPlot for organizing memes
The event will be in-person, and will take place in Pigott Hall, Room 252, on February 14, 2022 at 12pm (PT). In preparation for the talk and the subsequent discussion, please take a look at some of the material gathered on the meme wall: https://memes.sucho.org/.
