Please join the upcoming Comparative Methodologies talk with Timothy Hampton (French and Comparative Literature, UC Berkeley) titled, "Eat, Pray, Compare: Evasion and Self-Creation in the Memoir and the Critical Essay."
The recent emergence of the memoir as a major narrative form raises a number of interesting questions about the changing role of narrative voice in the construction of character and the ordering of events. These are questions that touch as well on the recent return of the personal essay as a form of critical exploration. In this talk I will set in conversation recent work in memoir with self-construction in the essay. If, as comparatists, we are trained in critique, what happens when we try to invent ourselves?
