A Conversation with Sue Peabody: Slavery in France's Indian Ocean Empire

The Forced Migrations Workshop and the Division of Literatures, Cultures and Languages present a conversation with Susan Peabody (Washington State University) about slavery in France's Indian Ocean empire.

In the past, Prof. Peabody's work has shed light on the history of slave freedom suits in France. Her forthcoming book, Madeleine’s Children: Family, Freedom, Secrets and Lies in France’s Indian Ocean Colonies, 1750-1850, takes a biographical approach to the lives of individuals enslaved in plantations.

She is past president of the French Colonial Historical Society and serves on the editorial board of French Colonial History. She teaches early modern European society and culture, especially France and England; European colonialism 1450–1850; the Atlantic history of slavery, abolition and emancipation; and European women’s history.
