In this classic counterculture road movie, Dennis Hopper and Henri Fonda ride their motorcycles eastward in an attempt to reach New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras. The psychedelic adventures of this duo explore the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of the hippie movement, drug use, and communal living.  The film’s success initiated the New Hollywood phase of early 1970s filmmaking.
