Winner of the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1980, Werner Schroeter's eclectic film mixes styles and genres from realism, satire, opera, and surrealistic elements. It tells the story of the young Nicola, who leaves the poverty of his Sicilian home to work in Germany. Many Italians are working at the Volkswagen factory and Nicola easily finds a job. When he falls in love with the German girl Brigitte things seem to go well, until she leaves him.
