The Problem of Unity: Algerian Nationalism and Christian Progressivism in Algerian Youth Organizations, 1945-1954

Please join us for a discussion with Brooke Durham, Stanford PhD candidate in History. Under discussion will be a draft chapter from her dissertation. titled "The Problem of Unity: Algerian Nationalism and Christian Progressivism in Algerian Youth Organizations, 1945-1954."

The first chapter of Durham's dissertation sets the stage for the kinds of European-Algerian relationships that she examines throughout the project. After 1945, two important forces in Franco-Algerian politics and society had a significant influence on the other zones of European-Algerian contact in her dissertation: Algerian nationalism and Christian progressivism. This chapter explores the development of these two currents of thought and the attempts of Algerian and European youth movements to merge them within a single organization.
