New Flamencologías: A Collaborative Research Group on Critical Flamenco Studies and Generaciones: A Collaborative Research Group on Diasporic Mexicanidades are excited to welcome to campus the scholar, director, actor, choreographer, performer and stage manager Dr. Erica Acevedo-Ontiveros. Her innovative scholarship, which interrogates mexicanidad and Chicanx identity through the lens of flamenco, baile folclórico, and danza azteca performance, draws upon ethnography and embodied practice, among other methodologies. It is our hope that this multimodal and interdisciplinary two-day workshop will be an opportunity for us to think with Dr. Acevedo-Ontiveros at the boundaries of Chicanx and Critical Flamenco Studies.

On Thursday, December 1 (El Centro Chicano y Latino’s Community Room, 4-6 PM), Dr. Acevedo-Ontiveros will be presenting a work-in-progress titled "Reversing Coloniality in Chicanx Flamenco at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow." Light refreshments will be served at 4 PM and Dr. Acevedo-Ontiveros’ talk will begin at 4:30 PM. Tania Flores (PhD Candidate, ILAC) will be offering a response.

On Friday, December 2 (Roble Gym 115, 12-1 PM), Dr. Acevedo-Ontiveros will be leading a dance masterclass entitled: "Paseando/Walking/Caminando: Utilizing Azteca Approaches for Flamenco Cuadro Expansion." This event, organized in partnership with Flamenco Cardenal, is open to all. No previous dance experience is necessary, and absolute beginners are welcome.

We hope that you’ll join us for one or both sessions. Please RSVP here.
