PATH+: Clémence Scalbert-Yücel: Politics, Languages, and Gender: Reflexions on the Kurdish Literary Field

Can we speak of a Kurdish literary field? How can the study of the Kurdish literary world help us understand the power dynamics at play in literature? Reflecting back on years of work on Kurdish literature and the sociology of Kurdish cultural production, in this talk, I will present a few thoughts on the importance of the study of minority or minoritized literatures to challenge the boundaries of literature and literary norms. The talk will examine the role of politics as a driver of literary production while considering the issue of language use in an environment marked by language ban, language ideologies, and multilingualism. Finally, it will introduce the gender dynamics, looking at the place of women in the literary world and what a gendered approach of the literary world can bring to its understanding.
