(Professor of Mathematical Physics, Department of Mathematical Sciences / University of Copenhagen)

The Quantum Computer

Wednesday, November 5th, at 6:30pm
Pigott Hall (Bldg. 260), room 007

Matthias Christandl received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2006. He then became a Thomas Nevile Research Fellow at Magdalene College (Cambridge). In 2008, he joined the faculty at the University of Munich as a Junior-professor; from 2010 on he was an assistant professor at ETH Zurich, and since 2014 he has been appointed as a full professor at the University of Copenhagen. Christandl’s research lies in the area of Quantum Information Theory. It is his aim to improve our understanding of the ultimate limits of computation and communication given by quantum theory.
His lecture will discuss the conceptual fabric of a quantum computer and argue that “going quantum” in computation is not one of many, but a unique upgrade to hard- and software, expected to arrive in our lifetime.
