French Professor Emeritus Ralph Hester dies

The DLCL community mourns the loss of Ralph Hester, a prominent professor of French in the School of Humanities and Sciences. Hester died Nov. 29, 2020 at his Stanford home. He was 88.

Hester, professor emeritus in the French and Italian Department of the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages, spent his entire 37-year career at Stanford. He twice served as chair of the department and as director of Stanford’s French overseas programs in both Tours and Paris.

His legacy in the Department of French and Italian will continue via the the Ralph M. Hester Endowment Fund for French Studies. The endowment was established in recognition for his excellence as a teacher, as well as his outstanding contribution to the department over a very long period of time.
