The French-Speaking Worlds: Then and Now focal group, sponsored by the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (DLCL) Research Unit, the France-Stanford Center, and the Stanford Global Studies' Global Research Workshop Program, hosted Maurice Samuels, Betty Jane Anlyan Professor of French at Yale University. In his talk, “After the Coup: Literature in an Age of Tyranny,” Samuels used 19th-century France as a mirror for the modern-day erosion of democratic norms, exploring questions of the role of the author during tyranny.

The event was held at Pigott Hall, room 216 from 5pm-6:30pm on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
