Gary Huertas
Gary Huertas is a Ph.D. student in Iberian and Latin American Cultures. His research draws on decolonial memory, polyphonic systems, deconstruction, transatlantic song networks, and transmodern practices in Spanish and Portuguese speaking contexts. He studies how a transhistorical and environmental approach to lyric, narrative, archives and public policies provides a wider horizon for graphic and sonic encounters and problematizes hegemonic aesthetics of the historical experience.
He was awarded an honorable mention for his Master’s degree dissertation La montaña bautizada. Una novela heterónoma, an “expanded novel” where the vegetal agency, the hydric memory, the polyphonic character of the voice, and the aporetic nature of truth converge through a fabric of music lines and narrative threads.
Currently, he is a first-year Spanish teacher at the Stanford Language Center and co-chair of the Environmental Humanities Project.
Gary has prior teaching and researching experience in elementary and high school contexts. Before coming to Stanford he worked as a Literature and Social Studies teacher in different Colombian private and public schools. He also developed the curricular interdisciplinary program “Ruta Lectora de la Convivencia,” distributed in Colombia by the Publishing House Loqueleo-Santillana along with its editorial catalog throughout the national territory as a map to read literary works within social studies and citizenship frameworks.
He is the co-founder of the cultural promoter collective Atípico, organizer of the intermedial and interdisciplinary events Festival Péndola 1 and 2 in Bogotá.
