Josh Armstrong

Ph.D. Candidate in German Studies

I gained my undergraduate degree in German and French from the University of Cambridge in 2013, before coming to Stanford in 2016 to pursue graduate studies in the German Department. My final undergraduate work focused on the establishment and development of a gay identity under Socialism in the German Democratic Republic. I am interested in the effect that major changes at state level - for example, the fall of the Iron Curtain - have on both group and individual identities, specifically among sexual minorities.

I am also interested in environmental debates in modern Germany and Scandinavian countries, as well as the German relationship and attitudes towards the natural world as represented in literary and artistic works.

Education

2013: B.A. (Hons), Modern and Medieval Languages, University of Cambridge.
