Margarita Lila Rosa is a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University. Rosa earned a Ph. D from Princeton University in Comparative Literature and a graduate certificate in African American Studies. Rosa’s research explores Black women’s resistance to slavery and carcerality. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Slavery & Abolition, PhiloSOPHIA, sx salon, and The Black Scholar. Rosa’s current book project explores hereditary slavery and Black women’s challenge to the principle partus sequitur ventrem in Brazil. Rosa is also working on a second book project, where she explores the lives of Black women after the abolition of slavery in Rio de Janeiro and California as Black women aimed to resist the increasingly carceral logic of these two coastal states.
