Modern Languages Requirements


22 units and 6 courses minimum
The Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (DLCL) offers an 
undergraduate minor that draws upon courses in literature and language within 
the division's departments and elsewhere in the University. The minor in 
Modern Languages is offered to students who want to supplement the course 
work in their major with course work in modern languages and literatures.
All courses must be taken for a letter grade and may not be used towards any other 
major or minor. Only grades of ‘C’ and above may count towards the minor.
1. A minimum of 16 units  and 4 courses (8 units/2 courses per language) 
    at the intermediate level (second year) or beyond, not including conversational, 
    oral communication, business, or medical language courses in two languages other 
    than English offered by the DLCL.
2. At least two additional course, of 3 units or more, one in each 
modern language being studied in the minor. (6-10 units)
These courses must be taught by DLCL Academic Council members 
or other senior members of the DLCL faculty.
Advanced Placement credit and transfer credit do not apply to this minor. 
All courses applied to this minor must be Stanford and/or OSP courses.
Students are recommended to study, work, or intern abroad for at least 
eight weeks at a location where one of the languages is spoken.
Bing Overseas Studies second-year language courses may count.
Courses must be approved prior to the student’s arrival overseas.
