Portuguese Major & Minor Requirements

Portuguese Requirements


6 courses minimum: 23 units or beyond

All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
AP credit and Transfer credit from other Universities do not count towards this minor. 
1. Required Courses
Take two ILAC courses in literature or culture with a Lusophone component from the 
following pre-approved list:
     ILAC 161: Modern Latin American Literature (Autumn)
     ILAC 274: Aurality and Literature (Winter)
     ILAC 110N: Brazil: Music, Culture and Films (Winter)
     ILAC 217: Fernando Pessoa: Aesthetics as Ontology (Spring)
     ILAC 132E: Introduction to Global Portuguese (Spring)
2.  Take an additional 100- or 200-level ILAC courses to complete the core.
3.  Electives
The following may count to complete the 6 courses 23 unit minimum with the approval of the Chair of Undergraduate Studies:
 • Up to 3 courses of second-year and above Portuguese language courses 
(not including conversational courses).
 • Up to 5 units of coursework outside the department.
 • Up to 5 units of Thinking Matters with a Portuguese 
component taught at least partially by an ILAC faculty member  • Additional related 100- or 200-level ILAC courses..
