Critical AI in the DLCL
The Critical AI research group offers a space for faculty and students to collectively address the impact of AI technologies and tools on research, teaching, and learning in the DLCL. As companies and EdTech enterprises push for making AI part of the core infrastructure of higher education, humanities disciplines in languages, cultures, and literatures have faced pressure to uncritically adopt these still untested technologies and commercial applications. Many of us feel like responding to the AI hype is a matter of individual preference, but it is clear that the "escalating AI arms race among tech giants to win over universities and students” (Natasha Singer, NYT) has and will have far-reaching and damaging implications that can only be countered, understood, and communicated through collective action and collaboration. This research group aims to build and collect resources, discuss early studies and results on the cognitive, financial, ethical, and political effects of AI, share pedagogical strategies and experience, and formulate possible positions and language to support DLCL students, instructors, and advisors.
