DIS/ABLE: A Disability Studies Reading Group
DIS/ABLE: A Disability Studies Reading Group seeks to create a transdisciplinary space on campus for reading and discussing recent work by scholars from the world of Disability Studies in dialogue with contemporary social, political, and economic issues related to dis/ability and dis/abled people, lives, and futures. As a younger field, Disability Studies has not yet enjoyed widespread nstitutional recognition and often finds itself divided across fields, disciplines, and methodological approaches, a positioning that is at once a strength and a weakness. This Reading Group begins with the belief that Disability Studies’s multidirectional and multi-scalar engagements allow it both to address the intimate, material experiences of disability and to challenge epistemological and structural forces undergirding academia. We will take an intersectional approach to disability, engaging with disability in its lived realities, which are inseparable from experiences including but not limited to race, gender, sexuality, capitalism, class, and colonialism.
