Portuguese

The Portuguese language offers students access to a wide range of cultures and literatures: it is currently the sixth most widely spoken language in the world and the most spoken language south of the equator. Stanford's Language Center offers a comprehensive Portuguese language program, and ILAC faculty members offer courses each quarter on Lusophone literature and cultures. Undergraduate and graduate seminars focus on world-renowned authors, as well as topics such as Afro-Brazilian culture, Indigenous Brazil, Lusophone Africa, and Portugal's Indian Ocean Empire.
