A fresh take on the horror genre, Alfredson mixes quirky young love with moody horror and pristine editing in Let the Right One In, an adaptation of John Lindqvist’s vampire novel of the same name. The film is only partially concerned with horror, as it explores the isolation and insecurities of Oskar, a mistreated adolescent who finds an unexpected alliance with a pretty young vampire, Eli, in an otherwise bleak and violent world. Let the Right One In, whose screenplay was written by Lindqvist, met immediate success and has endured as an intense look at adolescence, violence, and the struggle to fit in.
